Turbine loads

The NSW Monitoring and Evaluation Programme item 1.2 deals with the impact of the combined load of wind and waves on offshore wind turbines. This item includes aspects such as: wind conditions, design conditions (wave/current/wind data), dynamics of offshore wind turbines and aero-elastic blade stability.

Learning objectives

  • Description of offshore wind turbine loads; relevant wind characteristics at sea, both 'undisturbed' and in the wind farm
  • Description of characteristic values of waves and current (in combination with wind data) for the verification of design tools for the dynamic response of offshore wind turbines
  • Description of the complete dynamic behaviour as well as the characteristic internal loads of offshore wind turbines needed for the design
  • Insight into the conditions in which reduced damping occurs in order to assess the relevance of aero-elastic stability

Reports and data
Wind measurements are taken using a met mast at 22, 70 and 116 meters height, cup and ultrasonic measurements. The following data are collected:

  • Average wind speed, turbulence intensity, wind shear
  • The wake effects created by wind turbines
  • The character of the sea state (swell, wave height) in relation to the wind
  • Related parameters such as: air temperature, rainfall, sea water temperature and met mast acceleration
