Global Sustainable Biomass

The Global Sustainable Biomass programme supports developing countries in making their biomass production for energy uses sustainable. It thus enables them to access the local or international market of sustainable biomass for energy uses. The most important target countries are Mozambique, Indonesia, Mali, South Africa, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Nicaragua and Colombia.

The programme contributes to sustainable economic growth and to improving the living conditions of citizens in developing countries. It thus fits into the Netherlands' wider purpose of contributing towards the achievement of the United Nations' eight Millennium Development Goals. The programme focuses particularly on Goal 1, eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, and Goal 7, creating a sustainable environment.

The Global Sustainable Biomass programme is financed through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. There are 26 projects within this programme. A total of € 12,500.00 was available for these projects. You may no longer request a subsidy. The ongoing projects can be found in the practical examples.

The Global Sustainable Biomass programme joins up with the current policy priorities of the ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands, because both focus on food security and a sustainable economic growth. With the subsidy of the Global Sustainable Biomass programme, farmers and producers in developing countries will have more security on their income, because they will produce more for the market instead of production for private use only. This market for biomass will probably grow the coming years. Also, producers decrease their risks by not only growing food crops, but energy crops as well, and/or by doing paid work at a plantation.

Strengthening the private sector, as is done by this programme, is part of sustainable economic development. Many (16) of the project implementers are local companies, for which the 50% subsidy is a stimulus to invest in the first phase of project development. In this phase, the companies either set up the logistic chain, test the production of electricity or fuel, or search for a market. As a result, they build up knowledge in the innovative area of sustainable biomass production. With this knowledge, the companies can find commercial financing more easily.
