Energising Development

The Energising Development Partnership Programme (EnDev) aims to provide five million poor people in developing countries with sustainable access to modern energy services, by 2015, thus contributing to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). EnDev is a Dutch-German partnership programme. It is funded by the Directorate-General for International Cooperation of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DGIS) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and carried out by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH with NL Agency.

Long-term sustainability is a core criterion for activities to be supported within the framework of EnDev and special attention is given to the developmental effects of the energy activities implemented. This means aiming to establish or enhance self-sustaining markets for affordable energy technologies, fuels and services adapted to the needs, without creating a long-term dependency on external donor funding.

The technologies and services predominantly promoted in EnDev's country programmes include photovoltaic energy, grid densification, micro-hydropower, energy-efficient cooking stoves and biogas.

The EnDev portfolio today consists of over 23 projects in 20 countries, all with the same basic goal but slightly different approaches.
