Bilateral Energy Cooperation Indonesia Netherlands (BECIN)
Energy Cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands
The Bilateral Energy Cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands (BECIN), under the auspices of the Embassy of the Kingdom in the Netherlands, contributes to the development of the renewable energy sector in Indonesia. The cooperation comprises activities in the fields of capacity development and subsector support for geothermal energy, for domestic biogas, and for micro-hydro power; you can find more information on the Embassy website.
One of the principal cornerstones of the cooperation is the bilateral Energy Working Group (EWG), for which NL Agency acts as the implementing body on the Netherlands side. Partner from the Indonesian side is the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. Active in Indonesia since 1995, the bilateral EWG plays a role in strengthening human capacity and provides support and advice for sectoral policy for renewable energy and energy access, both (capacity and policy framework) crucial for sector development.
At the occasion of 15 years of bilateral energy cooperation, the EWG published the book 'Out of the Shadows, the energy transition of Indonesia'. In their foreword, the Ministers Dr Darwin Saleh and Bert Koenders write: "All these [renewable] energy sectors require long-term growth and capacity, ranging from knowledge systems, advanced research, feasibility studies, resource surveys to a favourable investment climate, public-private partnerships and more."The EWG also acts as a platform for mutual business development in the energy sector. For that goal, facilitated matchmaking and workshops, advice on business opportunities, networking support and regular updates on recent developments are amongst the core activities of the EWG.
