Carbon credits

On behalf of the Netherlands government the carboncredits team within NL Energy and Climate contracted over 15 million tonnes of reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

These emission reductions, so called carbon credits, are purchased via the flexible mechanisms of the Kyoto protocol:

  • on behalf of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation through Joint Implementation (JI);
  • on behalf of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment through the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).

The contracted amount of ERUs and CERs is used for meeting the Dutch emission reduction target (-6% in 2012 against the base year 1990) to comply with the Kyoto Protocol and as such contribute to climate change mitigation.

NL Energy and Climate carries out various climate related supporting activities that NL Energy and Climate carries out for the Dutch government:

  • Issuing Letters of Approval under the so-called Approval Procedure for both JI and CDM projects. For more information please open the link on the approval procedure.
  • Act as Designated Focal Point for JI. Please follow the link for more information on the approval procedure.
  • Capacity building. Exchange experience and built know-how with other countries on Kyoto-related issues, i.e. EU-Emission Trading Scheme, JI Track 1 procedure and compliance issues.
  • Contribution to the Nairobi Initiative to increase the involvement of sub-Sahara African countries in CDM.
  • Acts on behalf of the Netherlands Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment as the DNA.
