New rapport on Feasibility Study Jatropha - Certified sustainable Jatropha oil from outgrowers
Recent Dutch and European regulation encourage sustainability certification of biofuels and bioliquids to be used within the EU. The Netherlands technical agreement NTA 8080 Sustainability criteria for biomass for energy purposes can be used to assess sustainability of biomass for both the Dutch market and the European market and beyond. The NTA 8080 states that 'the sustainability requirements should not be at the cost of small-holders. For small-holders a practical approach is applied to enable them to comply with the requirements', (group)certification of biomass has not yet been proved viable for smallholder schemes.
To test the viability of group certification of smallholders in Tanzania, NEN, TU Eindhoven, SkyNRG, Diligent Tanzania and Diligent Energy Systems cooperate in pilot certification of the farmers who supply their product to Diligent Tanzania. This Feasibility Study Jatropha describes the first phase of the project. It provides insight in the technical and financial feasibility of certification of smallholders.
