Lunch lecture Biofuels in Mozambique

Monday 16th January 2012 key note speaker Nuria Cunha Soares was invited by NL Agency to talk about the status and progress on biofuels in Mozambique. Mozambique is interested in biofuels because of oil prices, which result in a burden on the national balance.

Blending of biofuels
In 2009, the National Biofuel Policy and Strategy has been approved by the Government of Mozambique to promote the production of biofuels and the establishment of a national market. Mozambique is the first country in Africa to introduce an obligatory blending of biofuels. This has demonstrably to be sustainable biofuel production. Mozambique has asked for support for the operationalization of the sustainability assessment. As part of the Netherlands Sustainable Biomass Programs of NL Agency the Wagingen University Research (WUR) was commissioned to support this project for one year (more back ground information is to be found here, please scroll to Mozambique).

Progress on regional biomass production
Nuria Cunha Soares works for a half year now on this project and reports on the status and progress. Cunha Soares: "We have condensed the criteria and indicators, but now we need to integrate them into the existing project evaluation procedures and legislation." Kees Kwant of NL Agency organised the lecture: "Mozambique is advanced in drafting the biofuel blending obligation, but will have to work hard to implement the sustainability indicators and make the production and utilisation of biofuels sustainable."
