Organisation Waste Management Department

The Waste Management Department is the central contact point for authorities and companies in the area of waste.
We implement programmes, subsidy schemes and national and international regulations and advise on the preparation and evaluation of waste policy.

The Waste Management Department is a centre of expertise for waste. Our tasks are to:

  • Implement the National Waste Management Plan (LAP)
  • Monitor and evaluate waste policy
  • Stimulate waste prevention and the separate collection of waste
  • Explore future developments in the national and international waste market
  • Stimulate sustainable purchasing and substainable enterprise.

The department's activities yield practical information for authorities and companies. For example, you can contact us for information about the objectives and costs of waste policy, best practices and pilot projects.

Our advisers work for and with other stakeholders including provinces, municipalities, businesses, knowledge institutes and trade associations. We bridge the gap between policy and practice by fostering constant communication between those who formulate policy and those who have to put that policy into practice.

Your guide to national and international legislation
What legislation applies to the waste sector? And how should you interpret the regulations and procedures governing waste? The Waste Management Department can also answer these and other questions in the regulatory sphere.

We implement various national and European waste regulations and decisions. As a result, our advisers have detailed knowledge of waste-related legislation and its application in practice. We will be happy to advise you on the correct procedures. For example, you have to apply to us for permission to import or export waste and we will help you to comply with decisions relating to mandatory recycling of waste. We are also responsible for issuing permits for waste collection and dispensations from landfill bans.
