Summary

Throughout the life-cycle of biofuels, emissions arise during biomass feedstock production, during transportation of the raw material and products, during conversion of the feedstock into the biofuel, and via use of the fuel in cars. A life-cycle assessment (LCA) was used to study all these effects. In general, in all LCAs, there are many assumptions that cannot be made in a fully objective manner. This makes LCA projects susceptible to comment or interpretation. In order to improve the acceptance of the results, Agentschap NL (SenterNovem) commissioned Ecofys to perform a full biofuel LCA with active participation by a diverse group of stakeholders.
